This is Neil Young's "country" album. Some of his other stuff could be called near-country, but this is pure country. Neil and the International Harvesters (his backup band) performed several of these songs on their 1984 tour (the period in which Neil was unable to record due to litigation with Geffen Records).
Neil refers to this album as Old Ways II. He calls a rejected 1983 album he turned into Geffen Records Old Ways I.
"California Sunset" is from a performance recorded for the US public television show "Austin City Limits" on September 25, 1984.[DGS].
"The Wayward Wind" is something of a country standard and has been recorded by Patsy Cline, among others [DGS].
There are several familiar names in the musician's list. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Bela Fleck are well known for their solo work. Ben Keith and Tim Drummond have appeared on several other Neil Young albums.
Waylon Jennings later recorded a cover version of "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?".
